Brenmiller Energy (Nasdaq: BNRG), a global leader in thermal energy storage (TES) solutions for industrial and utility markets, has announced a significant development in their collaboration with Tempo Beverages Ltd. ("Tempo"). The Company has commenced the construction phase of its bGen™ ZERO TES system at Tempo’s beverage production facility in Netanya, Israel. This initiative marks a milestone in Brenmiller's mission to replace traditional fossil fuel boilers with sustainable energy solutions, thereby advancing the beverage industry's transition to greener operations.
Project Overview
The project entails the installation of a 32 MWh bGen™ TES system that will replace Tempo’s current fossil fuel boilers. This state-of-the-art system will deliver sustainable process heat through an innovative Energy as a Service (EaaS) model. Tempo, a prominent beverage producer and distributor in Israel, is partially owned by Heineken International B.V. and manages widely recognized brands such as Heineken and Pepsi.
Brenmiller’s bGen™ TES system will be charged using a mix of rooftop solar panels and ultra-low-cost off-peak grid power. This dual charging approach ensures that the system meets Tempo’s specific operational needs while promoting energy efficiency. The final design of the system is projected to be completed by the end of July 2024, with component procurement already underway. All manufacturing processes will take place at Brenmiller’s TES gigafactory in Dimona, Israel, renowned for its capacity to support substantial production demands. The timeline for this ambitious project is as follows:
End of July 2024: Completion of the final system design.
End of September 2024: Initiation of on-site assembly.
End of 2024: Completion of system assembly.
May 2025: Full commissioning of the system.
Avi Brenmiller, Chairman and CEO of Brenmiller, highlighted the significance of this project, stating, "We are pleased to report that our project to replace Tempo’s polluting heavy oil boilers with our bGen™ thermal battery is progressing according to schedule and is on-track to be commissioned less than a year from now." This transition is particularly impactful given the food and beverage industry’s status as one of the top global consumers of thermal energy.
Brenmiller’s engagement with Tempo sets a precedent for similar enterprises within the food and beverage sector. Approximately 15% of Brenmiller’s $500 million-plus project pipeline involves collaborations with food and beverage manufacturers, making it the company’s largest industry vertical by project count. The Dimona gigafactory’s production capacity, which can support potential sales of up to $200 million, underscores Brenmiller’s ability to meet burgeoning demand in this sector.
The bGen™ TES System
The bGen™ TES system stands out due to its versatile and sustainable approach to energy storage and utilization. Here’s how it works:
Energy Conversion and Storage: The system converts electricity into heat, which is stored in crushed rocks. This heat can be derived from renewable energy sources or low-cost electricity from the grid.
On-Demand Energy Release: The stored heat can be discharged in the form of steam, hot water, or hot air, aligning with customer requirements and ensuring a steady supply of energy as needed.
Grid-Balancing Capabilities: By storing and releasing energy as required, the bGen™ system supports the integration of utility-scale renewables, providing essential flexibility and aiding in grid balancing.
The bGen™ TES system has garnered considerable acclaim, being named among TIME’s Best Inventions of 2023 in the Green Energy category. Brenmiller's innovation helps energy-intensive industries and power producers significantly reduce their reliance on fossil fuels. Their patented bGen™ thermal battery is modular and scalable, capable of converting renewable electricity into zero-emission heat efficiently and reliably.
As the most experienced thermal battery developer globally, Brenmiller operates the world’s sole gigafactory dedicated to thermal battery production. This facility ensures high-volume manufacturing capabilities, positioning the company as a trusted partner for leading multinational energy companies.
Future Prospects
The successful implementation of the bGen™ TES system at Tempo’s facility is expected to catalyze further adoption across the food and beverage industry and beyond. With increasing awareness and regulatory pressure to adopt sustainable practices, industries are likely to seek reliable, cost-effective solutions like the bGen™ system. Brenmiller’s robust project pipeline and proven track record make them well-placed to capitalize on this growing demand.
Brenmiller Energy’s venture with Tempo Beverages signifies a pivotal step towards sustainable industrial processes. The deployment of the bGen™ TES system not only exemplifies the practical application of green technology but also highlights the potential for widespread adoption in energy-intensive sectors. As the project progresses towards its May 2025 commissioning date, it stands as a testament to Brenmiller’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
